The Right Way to Handle a Fabric Sofa Stain
The Right Way to Handle a Fabric Sofa Stain

If you have a fabric sofa, stains are inevitable, and what you do in the first few minutes after a spill makes all the difference. The instinct to grab whatever is nearby and start scrubbing is completely understandable. It is also one of the worst things you can do. So, before you reach for the dish soap or the paper towels, here’s what Arslanian Bros. suggests you do first.
Blot, Never Scrub
The moment a spill happens, resist the urge to rub it. Rubbing spreads the stain outward and pushes it deeper into the fabric fibers, making it significantly harder to remove later. Instead, use a clean, dry white cloth and blot gently from the outside edge of the stain inward. Work slowly and replace the cloth frequently so you lift the stain rather than redistribute it across the fabric.
Know What You Are Dealing With
Not all stains respond to the same treatment, and the wrong approach can permanently set a stain rather than remove it. Water-based stains like juice, coffee, or wine respond differently than oil-based stains from food or lotion. Before applying any cleaning solution, identify the cause of the stain so you can treat it appropriately. If you are unsure, a small amount of cold water on an inconspicuous area is a safer starting point than a chemical cleaner.
Check Your Fabric's Cleaning Code
Most sofas have a tag with a cleaning code that tells you exactly what is safe to use on the fabric. W means water-based cleaners are safe. S means solvent-based cleaners only. WS means either can be used with care. X means professional cleaning only, and ignoring that code can void a warranty or permanently damage the material. If your tag is missing or faded, err on the side of caution and contact a professional before attempting any treatment.
Resist the Internet Rabbit Hole
There is no shortage of home remedy advice online, and some of it is genuinely harmful to upholstery. Hydrogen peroxide can bleach certain fabrics. Dish soap left in the fibers attracts more dirt over time. Club soda is largely a myth. When in doubt, do less rather than more — a stain that has been treated incorrectly is much harder to remove than one that has simply been left alone.
When It Is Time to Call the Professionals
Some stains are beyond the reach of any home remedy, and some fabrics simply should not be touched without professional experience.
