Restore or Replace? What to Do With a Worn Oriental Rug

Every fine oriental rug eventually shows its age. Thinning pile, faded sections, or a few open seams can leave an owner wondering whether the rug is still worth keeping.
Arslanian Bros. has guided Cleveland families through that exact decision since 1959, and the answer is rarely as simple as age alone.
Age Is Not the Same as Damage
A rug that has been in a family for generations often looks worn simply because it has been loved and used. Fading and soft wear patterns do not necessarily mean the piece has lost its value. A slightly thinner pile does not mean it has lost its structural integrity either. Many of these rugs still have decades of life left once properly cared for. A trained eye can usually tell the difference within minutes.
What Actually Determines Restoration Value
The foundation is what matters most. If the warp and weft threads holding the rug together remain sound, fringe repair and edge rebinding can bring a rug back to excellent condition. Spot reweaving often finishes the job. A rug with a failing foundation, widespread dry rot, or extensive moth damage is a different story entirely. That distinction changes the recommendation completely.
Hand-Knotted Construction Changes the Math
Hand-knotted wool and silk rugs are built to last generations when properly maintained, and the craftsmanship involved in the original construction is difficult or impossible to replicate today. That quality is exactly why restoration so often makes more sense than replacement for a well-made piece. Finding a comparable rug new would cost far more than most owners expect.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
Machine-made rugs with synthetic fibers generally do not offer the same return on restoration investment. If a rug has sentimental value or genuine craftsmanship behind it, restoration is almost always worth exploring first before assuming it needs to be replaced.
